Transformational Times as Treasurer of AAAS

I joined the board of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2011, as Treasurer.

by David E Shaw

AAAS is the world’s largest general scientific society and is widely known as publisher of the journal Science.  Throughout it’s ~150 year history AAAS has been an exceptionally valuable and trustworthy resource in advancing science, engineering and innovation in the world for the benefit of society.

My responsibilities at AAAS include management of the investment fund, chair of audit and compensation committees, and chair of the board’s transformation steering committee. Via AAAS, I serve on the board of Science China.

I have welcomed the opportunity to participate in diverse AAAS activities at a time of extraordinary opportunity in the world of science. As a membership organization, AAAS products and services are designed to serve membership needs and the broader interests of science. While we are perhaps best known as a publisher, other activities include science support programs, policy analyses, science meetings, education and training, public engagement and international diplomacy.

A very important current priority is to expand the organization’s digital media capabilities to better support our mission. A strong digital team has joined AAAS to support this priority. An example of an important recent digital initiative is the launch of an on-line open access journal: Science Advances: http://www.aaas.org/news/aaas-expands-science-family-journals-launch-science-advances
