The American Association for the Advancement of Science is the world’s largest general scientific society. Throughout it’s ~150 year history, AAAS has been an exceptionally valuable and trustworthy resource in advancing science, engineering and innovation in the world for the benefit of society. It’s journal SCIENCE is often considered to be the world’s most authoritative journal on important scientific matters. David Shaw serves as Treasurer on the board of AAAS, as chair of audit and transformation committees, and as a director of SCIENCE China.

Maine Huts & Trails is a non-profit organization that has built and manages a system of backcountry eco-lodges and trails to offer “off the grid,” hut-to-hut adventures in some of Maine’s most spectacular wilderness areas. Maine Huts promotes year-round people-powered recreation while sponsoring environmental stewardship and conservation along a sensitive corridor of lakes, rivers and forests from the Mahousic Mountains to Moosehead Lake. Ben Shaw served as a Founding Trustee from 2000 to 2014.
The Sargasso Sea Alliance is a non-profit organization created to mobilize national governments and international organizations to protect the unique and vulnerable ocean ecosystem of the Sargasso Sea. A multinational declaration for protection of the Sargasso Sea was adopted on March 11, 2014 in Hamilton, Bermuda. David Shaw served as founding chair of the executive committee of the Alliance and co-chair of it’s steering committee. The Sargasso Sea executive committee members were named International Seakeepers of the year in September 2013.
The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit organization focusing on mammalian genetics research to advance human health. The Laboratory employs a staff of more than 1,500 people in Bar Harbor, Maine, Sacramento, California, and Farmington, Connecticut . Ben Shaw and David Shaw have served on the Board of Governing Trustees for more than twenty years, including chair.
The Harvard Kennedy School is one of the world’s most eminent social science research institutions – housing 15 research centers and institutes and more than thirty executive education and degree programs. More than 46,000 Kennedy School alumni reside in more than 200 countries and territories and serve in a wide range of positions in the public, private and nonprofit sectors. David Shaw served as a Senior Fellow at the Kennedy School, on the advisory board of the Center for Public Leadership and on the Selection Committee for America’s Best Leaders.
Maine Medical Center is a ~650 bed tertiary care hospital serving Greater Portland, the state of Maine, and northern New England. MMC employs more than 6,000 people. David Shaw served as a trustee of Maine Medical Center.
