Wondrous Seascapes of Galapagos Islands and Raja Ampat, Indonesia

by David Shaw

Recent news about Raja Ampat, Indonesia and the Galapagos Islands brought back memories of important ocean stewardship expeditions to these amazing seascapes 10 years ago.

Mongabay wrote a piece about newly published scientific evidence that confirms the Wayag Lagoon in the Raja Ampat archipelago is a globally rare nursery for juvenile manta rays. Princeton University recently published an article about a long believed extinct giant tortoise species that was found alive.

Our expeditions, including a Mission Blue TED Prize journey to Galapagos, helped launch a new era in global ocean stewardship including a pioneering high seas initiative that I led for more than 2 million square miles in the Sargasso Sea.
