Witness to Wonder

By David E. Shaw

Upon the occasion of my 75th orbit of the sun, I’m happy to share a few reflections through the short film embedded in this blog post.

Rather than looking back at the milestones of one life, Witness to Wonder reflects on the extraordinary era that so many of us have been privileged to shape and witness. During a single human lifetime, we’ve experienced breathtaking advances in science, medicine, technology, exploration, human rights, and environmental stewardship, alongside profound challenges that remind us how much work remains.

My hope is that Witness to Wonder offers a moment to step back from the relentless pace of daily life, appreciate the remarkable journey humanity has taken, and renew our sense of optimism and responsibility for the future. Every generation inherits both wonders and challenges. What matters most is what we choose to do with them.

The film is intended as a tribute to the countless “wave makers” whose vision, courage, compassion, and perseverance have helped shape the extraordinary progress of the past 75 years. Likewise, my recent bookWave Making: Inspired by Impact, is offered as an expression of gratitude to all those who strive to leave the world better than they found it.

I hope you’ll enjoy the film, share it with others if it resonates with you, and perhaps take a few moments to reflect on the wonders you’ve witnessed, and the positive contributions you’ve made, during your own orbits around the sun.
