David Shaw & the Sargasso Sea Alliance: International Seakeepers of the Year

In September 2013 members of the executive committee of the Sargasso Sea Alliance were honored as “international seakeepers of the year” for extraordinary contributions to the health of world oceans.

As founding chair of the Alliance, it was gratifying to see this recognition of such important work and I was pleased that this is the first time that the award has been given to a team versus an individual.  Much in life is accomplished by teams, and the Sargasso Sea Alliance is a great example of this, as we sought to create a novel stewardship mechanism for “high seas” which represent the world’s largest ecosystem.

The award ceremony took place at the St Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco during the historic America’s Cup races.
