David Shaw appointed to Leadership Council of Service Year Alliance
Service Year Alliance is an organization created in 2016 with the mission of making a year of paid, full-time service a common expectation and opportunity for all young Americans.
by David E Shaw
I was previously an organizer of the Service-Nation Summit in 2008. That summit brought together service organizations across America to emphasize the need to expand national service opportunities ranging from education, public safety and conservation, to arts & culture, social services, disaster relief and community service of many kinds. History has shown that engagement in public programs via a “service year” can enhance habits of citizenship and forge a heightened sense of common purpose for addressing critical community and national needs.
My public service experience has included Chair of The Jackson Laboratory, Senior Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, Treasurer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, trustee of the National Park Foundation, co-chair of the Aspen Institute High Seas Initiative, founding chair of the Sargasso Sea Alliance, board member Maine Medical Center & Outward Bound, Executive Committee of the US Israel Science and Technology Commission, and others.
Fellow members of the Leadership Council include: Madeleine Albright, David Gergen, Barbara Bush, Jean Case, Ariana Huffington, Walter Isaacson, Wendy Kopp, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Wes Moore, Donna Shalala and Olympia Snowe.
