David Evans Shaw appointed Affiliate Faculty in Sculpture: Department of Art and Art History University of New Hampshire

September 1, 2025

Durham, New Hampshire

David Evans Shaw has joined the faculty of the University of New Hampshire as an Affiliate Faculty Member in Sculpture.  In this part-time capacity, Shaw will draw on his wide-ranging expertise and experience in science, art, conservation, entrepreneurship, and other fields to collaborate with faculty members and students to explore novel themes, ideas, and creative practice in sculpture and other media.

In this new role, Shaw will participate in the Fall 2025 UNH Biennial Faculty Exhibition at Paul Creative Arts Center from August 25 to October 12.

Benjamin Cariens, Chair of the UNH Department of Art and Art History within the College of Liberal Arts, played a lead role in creating this new relationship. David is the first artist to work in this capacity with our students in the Department of Art and Art History, and we envision a novel and constructive opportunity for exploration and expression of important ideas through sculpture.  David’s Amara sculptures on campus at UNH, conceived when he was a student here, provide examples of creative artistic expression, and they reflect the important role that art has played in David’s career.

Upon accepting this appointment, Shaw expressed enthusiasm for this expansion of his relationship with UNH.  “I was surprised and grateful when this opportunity arose several months ago.  As a graduate of UNH and co-founder of the school’s Shaw Innovation Explorer (SIE) Program, I’ve had the opportunity to be part of the UNH community in various ways for many years.  The SIE program has been successful in inspiring students to explore innovative, adventurous and entrepreneurial programs and careers that harness their passion and creativity.“

Shaw is a prominent American entrepreneur and activist with extensive global leadership experience in science-based companies, investment management, public service and non-profit organizations. He is an experienced photographer, filmmaker, and sculptor, as well as an art collector and supporter of the arts.  His support of public art includes sponsorship of the Shaw Sculpture Park at the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine.   His bio can be read HERE
