Capitalism at its Best – America’s Next 250 Years Starts Now
by David Evans Shaw
I’m sharing this thoughtful statement from CEO Martin Whittaker because it speaks to the deep purpose of our work at Just Capital, and resonates with important themes of my recent book: Wave Making, Inspired By Impact.
Capitalism, like democracy, is not self-executing. At its best, it is a powerful engine for innovation and prosperity—but only when it is guided by vigilant stewardship and a regularly renewed sense of responsibility. Left unattended, it’s value can pool rather than circulate .. contracting instead of expanding.
Our work at JUST Capital is rooted in the belief that the covenant between business and society must be continually renewed—not through slogans, but through practice. The most compelling examples of progress come from organizations that choose to create exceptional, durable value for all stakeholders: workers, customers, communities, shareholders, and the environment. These organizations show us what “great” can look like. They don’t wait for capitalism to be fixed from the outside; they elevate it from within. In doing so, they offer a living proof point that can inspire others and expand the societal benefits of our economic system for all Americans.
