Gorilla Doctors at The Explorers Club

June 22, 2019 by David E Shaw

Earlier this week I organized and led a presentation at The Explorers Club in New York City to bring attention to an extraordinary wildlife conservation story.  It is the story of a precipitous decline in the planet’s population of mountain gorillas in the past century, and the recent resurgence of that population due to thoughtful and courageous action over several decades.

I experienced these amazing creatures last year in remote volcanic landscapes of East Africa.  My visit was very significantly enriched by an unexpected meeting in Rwanda with Dr. Mike Cranfield – Africa head of Gorilla Doctors.  Our connection was based on deep mutual interests in veterinary medicine and I felt compelled to tell the story of our visit, of mountain gorillas and of Gorilla Doctors via a short film that I screened at The Explorers Club event.  My film can be viewed  here.
