Celebrating Leadership in Ocean Stewardship : Expedition to Palau 2018

By David Shaw

The Pacific island nation of Palau is playing an inspirational leadership role in ocean stewardship at a time of great historic significance for global ocean health.  The Palau National Marine Sanctuary Act, one of the world’s most ambitious ocean conservation initiatives,  was signed into law in October 2015 by President Tommy E. Remengesau Jr.  This landmark legislation establishes a “no take” and no extraction area, and covers 80% of the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone.  The Palau National Marine Sanctuary builds on Palau’s long history of effective fisheries management through local practice.

President Remengesau has courageously led this effort and it has been an honor for me to collaborate with him via Ocean Elders, high seas stewardship and other initiatives.

In 2018 I had the opportunity to join an expedition to Palau that included celebration of the country’s leadership role in ocean stewardship, exploration of Palau’s protected and pristine ocean ecosystems, and discussion of expanded sustainability opportunities.
