Curiosity Retreat — July 2014
- Exploration & Discovery
Another fascinating retreat in Gateway.
John Hendricks kicked off the retreat with a fascinating presentation on “the universe of big numbers” from the most macro to the most micro. We were challenged to consider the number of stars in our galaxy, the number of grains of sand on Earth and the number of atoms in a grain of sand. We were reminded that the universe has tens of thousands of galaxies and billions of stars per galaxy. That our sun is larger than a million Earths. That there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on Earth.
Eric Drexler and Jim Phillips discussed the future of nanotechnology. Vint Cerf presented on the future of the internet. Rudy Tanski and Deepak Choprah discussed mind and brain issues, and Nancy Etcoff led a session on the future of happiness. Sheryl WuDunn discussed modern China. And there were other great sessions.
It was a special treat to have Ben Shaw join this retreat.
