David E. Shaw
David Shaw’s career has combined business leadership, government and community service, strategy consulting and investment management. He is a founder, former CEO and executive chairman of Ikaria Holdings, a leading critical care company (2009 revenues >$270MM), founder and retired CEO of IDEXX Laboratories, a diversified life sciences company (IDXX: 2009 revenues ~$1B), a venture investor/director of Ironwood Pharmaceuticals (IRWD), a venture investor/director of Sapphire Energy (renewable fuels), founding chairman of DVM and Fetch, direct marketing companies, and has been a director/founding investor of more than a dozen public and private companies.
He has been active in growth equity and venture capital investments as a partner in Venrock Associates (2004-2009), as a senior advisor to New Mountain Capital (2004-2007) and currently as Managing General Partner of Black Point Group, a family investment partnership. Previously his experience included government service, and business strategy consulting.
Recently he has served on the faculty of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, leading programs in corporate governance and business social responsibility, and serving on the advisory board of the Center for Public Leadership. He is Treasurer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) publisher of Science, a director of the National Parks Foundation, and has been Chair of The Jackson Laboratory (genetics research), a board member of Maine Medical Center, Hurricane Island Outward Bound and other non-profits, and a member of the Executive Committee of the US-Israel Science and Technology Commission, the Council on Foreign Relations, ServiceNation, the scientific advisory board for Discovery Communications, the selection committee for America’s Best Leaders (US News and World Report), YPO and CEO.
He has been a frequent speaker on business leadership, entrepreneurship and public service and a participant in NetLeaders, Mission Blue, TED, Fortune Brainstorm, the Sargasso Sea Protection Initiative, Biotech CEO, Teach for America, Time World Health Forum, the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference of the Department of Defense, the Congressional Advisory Committee on Biotechnology, Harvard Business School Senior Executive program, and many other public forums.
